בָּרוּךְ אֱלֹקֵינוּ שֶׁבְּרָאָנוּ לִכְבוֹדוֹ , וְהִבְדִּילָנוּ מִן הַתּוֹעִים , וְנָתַן לָנוּ תּוֹרַת אֱמֶת וְחַיֵּי עוֹלָם נָטַע בְּתוֹכֵנוּ .
Blessed is our G-d who created us for His glory, and separated us from those who stray, and gave us a Torah of truth, and eternal life He planted within us.

נְטִיעָה מַמָּשׁ אֲשֶׁר עוֹשָׂה פִּירוֹת תָּדִיר .
A real planting that produces fruits constantly.

וְזֹאת הַנְטִיעָה אֵינוֹ מִתְקַבֶּלֶת אֶלָא בַּעֲפָרוֹ שֶׁל אַבְרָהָם , לֹא בְּעָפָר אַחֵר , בְּטֶבַע הַנְטִיעוֹת שֶׁאֵינָן מִתְקַבְּלוֹת בְּכָל עָפָר רַק בַּעֲפָרוֹ .
And this planting is only accepted in the soil of Abraham, not in other soil, by the nature of the plantings, that they are not accepted in every soil, only in his soil.

וּמְזֶה הַטַעַם צָרִיךְ לְדַקְדֵק בשודיכין, שֶׁלֹא יִהְיֶה נִפְגַּם עָפָר שֶׁל אַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ .
And for this reason, one must be meticulous with shudichin [probably should be – shiduchin – matches], so that the soil of Abraham our father is not defected.

וְעַל כֵּן מִי שֶׁשׁוֹמֵר אֶת עֲפָרוֹ שֶׁלֹא לִינק עֲשָׂבִים רָעִים, וּמֵרִיק מָטָר תָּדִיר , הַיְנוּ דִּבְרֵי הַצַדִּיקִים כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב ” יַעֲרֹף כַּמָּטָר לִקְחִי ” ( דְּבָרִים ל”ב ) ,
Therefore, one who guards his soil so that harmful weeds don’t suckle (from it), and pours constant rain, that is, the words of the righteous, as it is written, “My teaching shall drip like the rain” (Deuteronomy 32:2),

אֲזַי מְגַדַּל פֵּירוֹת בְּטוּב טְעַם וְרֵיחַ וְנֶהֶנֶה מִמֶּנּוּ עֵצָה וְתוּשִׁיָּה .
then he raises fruits with good taste and fragrance, and benefits from it counsel and resourcefulness/presence of mind.

וְאִם חָלִילָה אֵינוֹ מְשַׁמֵר אֶת עֲפָרוֹ , אֲזַי מְגַדַּל עִנְבֵי בּסֶר וּמַקְהֶה שִׁנּוֹ , וַאֲפִילוּ תּוֹרָתוֹ וּמִצְוֹתָיו אֵין בָּהֶם טְעַם וְרֵיחַ .
But if, God forbid, he does not guard his soil, then he raises unripe grapes and blunts his teeth, and even his Torah and commandments don’t have in them taste and fragrance.

וְנַחְזֹר לְעִנְיָנוֹ , שֶׁבְּרֹב טוּבוֹ נָטַע בְּתוֹכֵנוּ דַּיְקָא , שֶׁהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא רָצָה לְהֵטִיב לְעָם קָדְשֵׁנוּ שֶׁיָּהֶנוּ מִטוּבוֹ בְּכָל עֵת בְּהִתְחַדְשׁוּת ,
And let us return to our subject, that in His abundant goodness, He planted within us specifically, for the Holy One, blessed be He, desired to benefit His holy nation so that they may enjoy His goodness at all times with renewal,

כִּנְטִיעָה זוֹ שֶׁמְגַדֶּלֶת בְּכָל עֵת מִמִּינוֹ בְּהִתְחַדְשׁוּת לְכָל אֶחָד , כְּפִי הַשְׁגָּחָתוֹ עַל עֲפָרוֹ ,
like this planting that produces at all times of its kind with renewal for each individual, according to his care over his soil,

מַה שֶׁלֹא זָכוּ אֲפִילוּ מַלְאֲכֵי מַעְלָה , כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב ” וְאֶתָה מַרְבְבֹת קְדֶשׁ ” ( דְּבָרִים ל”ג ) ,
which even the supernal angels did not merit, as it is written, “And He came (-to give the Torah to Israel) from the holy myriads (-of angels)” (Deuteronomy 33:2),

כִּי הֵם אֵינָם עָפָר וְאֵין הַתּוֹרָה עוֹשָׂה פֵּירוֹת .
for they are not soil, and the Torah does not produce fruits [in them].

וְעַל כֵּן בָּעָם הַקָּדוֹשׁ נִתְחַדַּשׁ בְּכָל דּוֹר סְפָרִים חֲדָשִׁים מִמִּינָהּ מַמָּשׁ ,
Therefore, among the holy nation, new books of its kind are renewed in every generation, from it’s very species,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב בַּזְהַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ , שֶׁהַתּוֹרָה הַקָּדוֹשָׁה וְכָל הַתַרְיַ”ג מִצְווֹת הֵם תַּרְיַ”ג עָטִין לָבוֹא עַל יָדָם לִשְׁלֵמוּת הַדַּעַת לָדַעַת ה ‘ ,
as it is written in the holy Zohar, that the holy Torah and all the 613 commandments are 613 counsels to come through them to the perfection of knowledge, to know God,

לְכָל אֶחָד כְּפִי שֶׁמְקַיִם הָעֵצוֹת הַתּוֹרָה כֵּן נִתְרוֹמֵם דַּעְתּוֹ וְנִתְלַהֵב לִבּוֹ לַעֲבוֹדַת ה ‘ ,
for each individual, according to how he fulfills the counsels of the Torah, so his knowledge is elevated, and his heart is inflamed for the service of God,

כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתוּב אִתְפַּשְׁטוּתָא דְּמֹשֶׁה בְּכָל דָּרָא .
as it is written, “The extension of Moses in every generation.”

וְהַצַדִּיקִים שֶׁבְּכָל דּוֹר הִמְצִיאוּ לָנוּ בְּהִתְחַדְשׁוּת מֵהַתּוֹרָה הַקְדוֹשָׁה לְפִי דְּרָא, עֵצוֹת לִשְׁלֵמוּת הַנַּ”ל .
And the righteous in every generation have brought forth for us, with renewal from the holy Torah according to the generation, counsels for the aforementioned perfection.

וַאֲקַוה לַה’ שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד יִמְצָא בּוֹ עֲצַת ה’ , לְהַצִיל נַפְשׁוֹ מִיֵּצֶר הָרָע וְלֹא לְקַלְקַל עֲפָרוֹ .
And I hope to G-d, that each one may find in it the counsel of G-d, to save his soul from the evil inclination and not to ruin his soil.

כּה יִתֵּן . אָמֵן :
So may He give. Amen.

מִי הָאִישׁ הֶחָפֵץ חַיִּים, מִי הַבּוֹחֵר בְּחַיִּים נִצְחִיִּים. מִי הֶחָס עַל נַפְשׁוֹ בֶּאֱמֶת, מִי לַה’, יָשִׂים לִבּוֹ אֶל הַחִבּוּר הַקָּטָן הַזֶּה, מְעַט הַכַּמּוּת וְרַב הָאֵיכוּת. הַבִּיטוּ וּרְאוּ וְהִתְמַמְּהוּ תִּמְהוּ, כִּי פֹּעַל פָּעַל בִּימֵיהֶם: אֲשֶׁר נִתְגַּלּוּ דְּרָכִים וְעֵצוֹת נִפְלָאוֹת וְנוֹרָאוֹת חֲדָשִׁים גַּם יְשָׁנִים, מְיֻסָּדִים עַל אַדְנֵי פָּז, שְׁתוּלִים עַל פַּלְגֵי מַיִם, נוֹבְעִים מִמַּעְיָן הַיּוֹצֵא מִבֵּית ה’: מַיִם עֲמֻקִּים עֵצָה בְּלֶב אִישׁ, אֲשֶׁר הִדְלֵם אִישׁ תְּבוּנוֹת. לְכוּ חֲזוּ מִפְעֲלוֹת ה’, שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם לַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה, כִּי הֵם דְּבָרִים הָעוֹמְדִים בְּרוּמוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם. דִּבְרֵי אֱלֹקִים חַיִּים וּמֶלֶךְ עוֹלָם: דְּבָרִים הַמְחַיִּין אֶת כָּל הַנְּפָשׁוֹת מִקָּטֹן וְעַד גָּדוֹל, מֵרוּם כָּל דַּרְגִּין עַד תַּכְלִית מַדְרֵגָה הַתַּחְתּוֹנָה: אֵין דְּבַר עֵצָה קְדוֹשָׁה נֶעֱלָם מִמְּךָ. אֲשֶׁר לֹא תִּמְצָאֵהוּ בַּסֵּפֶר הַזֶּה, וְכָל אֲשֶׁר תִּשְׁאָלְךָ נַפְשְׁךָ לֹא יֵאָצַל מִמְּךָ הַכֶּרֶךְ הַקָּטָן הַזֶּה. הַט אָזְנֶיךָ וּשְׁמַע, פְּקַח עֵינֶיךָ וּרְאֵה; וְהָבֵן וְהַבֵּט הָאֱמֶת לַאֲמִתּוֹ. הָסֵר מִמְּךָ עִקְּשׁוּת לֵב וְדַרְכֵי לֵיצָנוּת וּשְׁקָרִים. וְחָכְמוֹת שֶׁל הֶבֶל הַרְחֵק מִמְּךָ. חוּסָה עַל נַפְשְׁךָ וְהַטֵּה דַּעְתְּךָ וּמַחֲשַׁבְתְּךָ אֶל הָאֱמֶת לַאֲמִתּוֹ, כִּי אִם, חַס וְחָלִילָה, תִּטֶּה מִן הָאֱמֶת, אֶת מִי תַּטְעֶה. הֲלֹא לֹא תַּטְעֶה כִּי אִם אֶת עַצְמְךָ. אַיְיתִי סֵפֶר הַזֶּה וַחֲזֵה בּוֹ: הֲיֵשׁ בִּלְשׁוֹנוֹ עַוְלָה חַס וְשָׁלוֹם. אִם הִטָּה אֲשׁוּרוֹ מִנִּי דֶּרֶךְ הַיָּשָׁר וְהָאֱמֶת, אֲשֶׁר דָּרְכוּ בּוֹ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ מֵעוֹלָם: בַּה’ בָּטַחְתִּי. אַל אֵבוֹשׁ בַּדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה לֹא בְּעַלְמָא הָדֵּין וְלֹא בְּעַלְמָא דְּאָתֵי. אוֹדֶה ה’ מְאֹד בְּפִי וּבְתוֹךְ רַבִּים אֲהַלְלֶנּוּ, אֲשֶׁר עָמַד לִימִין אֶבְיוֹן כָּמוֹנִי, וְחִזְּקַנִי וְאִמְּצַנִי לִלְקֹט שׁוֹשַׁנִּים נוֹרָאִים כָּאֵלֶּה, . סְגֻלּוֹת יְקָרוֹת וּרְפוּאוֹת נִצְחִיּוֹת הָאֵלֶּה. חַיֵּי נְפָשׁוֹת כָּאֵלֶּה מִבְּאֵרוֹת מַיִם חַיִּים, מִמַּעְיְנֵי הַיְשׁוּעָה, אֲשֶׁר כָּל הַנּוֹבֵעַ מֵהֶם, כֻּלָּם מְיֻסָּדִים עַל דִּבְרֵי אֲבוֹתֵינוּ וְרַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה, בַּתּוֹרָה שֶׁבִּכְתָב וּבְעַל פֶּה. בַּתּוֹרָה נְבִיאִים וּכְתוּבִים; וְתַלְמוּד בַּבְלִי וִירוּשַׁלְמִי; וּמִדְרָשִׁים וְסִפְרֵי הַזֹּהַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ; וְסִפְרֵי הָאֲרִ”י, זִכְרוֹנוֹ לִבְרָכָה. עֲלֵיהֶם בְּנוּיִים וּמְיֻסָּדִים הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה, הַמּוּבָאִים בַּכֶּרֶךְ הַנּוֹרָא הַזֶּה. וּלְהַרְחִיב בְּשֶׁבַח מַעֲלָתָם יִקְצְרוּ הֲמוֹן יְרִיעוֹת, אַךְ הַמִּסְתַּכֵּל בָּהֶם בְּעֵין הָאֱמֶת, יִרְאֶה בְּעַצְמוֹ אֶת יְקַר תִּפְאֶרֶת גְּדֻלָּתָם, וְהָאֱמֶת יָעִיד עַל עַצְמוֹ. וַה’ אֱלֹקִים אֱמֶת; יִתֵּן לְיַעֲקֹב אֱמֶת, וְיִשְׁלַח אוֹרוֹ וַאֲמִתּוֹ וְיַנְחֵנוּ תָּמִיד בְּדֶרֶךְ הָאֱמֶת. וְיַטֶּה שִׁכְמֵנוּ לְעָבְדוֹ כָּל יְמֵי חַיֵּינוּ בֶּאֱמֶת, לֶאֱהֹב הַשָּׁלוֹם וְהָאֱמֶת, עַד יִכּוֹן בְּחֶסֶד כִּסֵּא דָּוִד, וְיֵשֵׁב עָלָיו בֶּאֱמֶת בִּמְהֵרָה בְּיָמֵינוּ אָמֵן:

Who is the man who desires life, who chooses eternal life [Psalms 34:13]? Who truly pities his soul, who is for the Lord [II Chronicles 15:12]? Let him set his heart to this small volume, small in quantity but great in quality. Look and see, and be astonished, utterly amazed [Habakkuk 1:5], for a work has been wrought in their days: paths and counsels, wondrous and awesome, new yet also ancient, founded upon bases of fine gold [Song of Songs 5:11], planted by streams of water [Psalms 1:3], flowing from the fountain that issues from the House of the Lord [Joel 4:18]. Deep waters are the counsel in a man’s heart, which a man of understanding draws forth [Proverbs 20:5]. Come, behold the works of the Lord [Psalms 46:9]; set your hearts to these words, for they are matters that stand at the height of the world. Words of the living G-d and eternal King: words that revive all souls, from the small to the great, from the highest of levels to the very lowest degree. No word of holy counsel is hidden from you that you will not find in this book, and all that your soul asks will not be withheld from you by this small volume. Incline your ear and hear, open your eyes and see [Isaiah 42:20]; understand and perceive the truth in its truth. Remove from yourself stubbornness of heart and the ways of mockery and falsehood. Keep far from you the wisdoms of vanity. Have pity on your soul and incline your mind and thoughts to the truth in its truth, for if, G-d forbid, you turn aside from the truth, whom will you deceive? Surely you will deceive only yourself. Bring this book and look into it: Is there injustice in its tongue, G-d forbid? Has its step turned aside from the straight and true path, the path our fathers trod from of old? In the Lord I have trusted; I shall not be ashamed by these words, neither in this world nor in the world to come [Psalms 25:2]. I will thank the Lord greatly with my mouth, and in the midst of the multitude I will praise Him [Psalms 109:30], for He stood at the right hand of a poor one like me [Psalms 109:31], and strengthened me and fortified me to gather these awesome roses, these precious treasures and eternal remedies, these lives of souls, from wells of living waters, from the fountains of salvation [Isaiah 12:3]. All that flows from them is founded upon the words of our fathers and our teachers, of blessed memory, in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah; in the Torah, Prophets, and Writings; in the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud; in the Midrashim and the holy books of the Zohar; and the books of the Ari, of blessed memory. Upon them are these words built and established, those brought in this awesome volume. To expound at length on their praiseworthy virtues, a multitude of pages would fall short. But one who gazes upon them with the eye of truth will see for himself the precious splendor of their greatness, and the truth will testify for itself. The Lord, G-d of truth [Jeremiah 10:10], will grant truth to Jacob [Micah 7:20], and send His light and His truth to guide us always in the path of truth [Psalms 43:3]. May He incline our shoulders to serve Him all the days of our lives in truth, to love peace and truth [Zechariah 8:19], until the throne of David is established in kindness, and he sits upon it in truth, speedily in our days, Amen [Isaiah 16:5].
